Quick answer
Numbers in Spanish follow a clear pattern. 40 is cuarenta, 30 is treinta and 50 is cincuenta. Between the tens you join with y, so 31 is treinta y uno and 44 is cuarenta y cuatro. The numbers from 16 to 29 are written as a single word, such as veintiocho for 28.
The short answer: 40 in Spanish is cuarenta (kwah-REN-tah), and 400 in Spanish is cuatrocientos (kwah-troh-see-EN-tohs). Every number below follows one of a handful of patterns once you know them. Learning the numbers is one of the basics when picking up Spanish. While they seem simple enough, practice is necessary so you will be able to use them effortlessly. Since the application of numbers is also very wide, it is definitely a topic that you want to get good at and not feel intimidated by.
We use numbers all the time and it’s something so basic that you probably barely noticed especially when you are speaking in your first language. However, when it comes to communicating in a foreign language, like Spanish in this case, you may find yourself a bit tongue-tied or not catching it fast enough when someone mentions a number to you.
